During the main story, the player can designate which mission to undertake when exploring, alongside their main mission of finding castaways of the rescue organization and Captain Olimar, a prominent character in the series. The game's main story focuses on the efforts of a new recruit for an extraterristrial rescue organization "The Rescue Corps", whom the player controls and can customize their appearance from the beginning - for the first time in Pikmin - in terms of name, facial appearance and uniform colour. As with previous games, each species of Pikmin have their own strengths and weaknesses, as well as unique abilities - one new species, the Ice Pikmin, can be used to freeze bodies of water as well as enemies - which the player will need to overcome the hazards found in each area, as well as underground caves.

Pikmin 4 utilises the same basic gameplay as its predecessors in the Pikmin series - players control a minuscule leader, who must spend days on an Earth-like planet, raising Pikmin to use in defeating enemies, securing objects and achieving specific goals in various locations.
In the game, the player assumes the role of a member of the Rescue Corps who is tasked with rescuing them while trying to save Captain Olimar in the process. The game will mark the first in the series to feature a custom playable character, alongside other features involving a newly adjusted day and night system, allowing players to freely explore the area during the night without having to mandatory retreat at the end of the day.
It is set for release on the Nintendo Switch on July 21, 2023. It will be the fourth main installment of the Pikmin series, following Pikmin 3 (2013), and sixth installment overall. Pikmin 4 is an upcoming real-time strategy video game developed by Nintendo EPD and Eighting and published by Nintendo.
